White Stone is a small community near the southern tip of the Northern Neck, where the Rappahannock River meets the Chesapeake Bay. The Northern Neck is the northernmost of the three major Virginia peninsulas on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. White Stone is approximately 40 miles North of Newport News, 65 miles East of Richmond, and 90 miles South of Washington, D.C..
The Northern Neck and vicinity is largely rural in nature, with farming, fishing, and water-related trades as the principal industries. The area is known for its abundant marine life and its natural beauty. The area is a favorite among those who enjoy sailing, power boating and sport fishing.
In recent years, the Northern Neck has had an influx of wealthy retirees from other areas of the country, resulting in a relatively cosmopolitan social atmosphere. The Tides Inn in nearby Irvington, with its superior restaurants and recreational facilities, is an example of the genteel rural atmosphere characteristic of the region. A modern general hospital, an excellent private day school, and numerous attractive shops are available in the area. When the services of a city are desired, both Norfolk and Richmond are located approximately an hour by car from White Stone.
