Our firm is unique among rural law firms in that our practice is not limited to only the local area. Although much of the firm's practice is conducted within an eight county area in eastern Virginia, a substantial portion of the practice involves the representation of major out-of-state clients, ranging from New Hampshire to Texas.
The firm, though embracing a wide area of general practice, concentrates particularly on the following areas of the law:
1. corporate and business law, with particular emphasis on banking and insurance, and maritime matters;
2. litigation in state and federal courts of original
jurisdiction;
3. wills, trusts and estates;
4. real estate, with particular experience in shoreline
and riparian law, in addition to more common transactions;
5. taxation;
6. appellate practice, in both the Supreme Court of
Virginia and in all federal appellate courts.
In choosing partners and associates, we strive to find exceptional individuals who can represent clients zealously while still maintaining civility. When evaluating potential associates, we give weight to not only performance in law school, but also undergraduate performance and work experience. We seek to employ associates who are comfortable with the values held by the present members of the firm, including personal integrity and ethics, loyalty to each other and to clients, mutual respect, and civility. Associates are exposed to a variety of legal fields, with the interests of the associate and the needs of the firm deciding an eventual area of concentration as a partner.
In addition to our traditional legal practice, members of our firm are involved with the Northern Neck and Virginia Bar Association, and in charitable and educational projects and organizations for the benefit of the community. Members of the firm also serve as Court Appointed Counsel for the County of Lancaster, and donate time to Pro Bono work.
